TUTORING SERVICES

Kaplan Tutoring Services offers academic subject tutoring, summer school alternative, and senior project coaching.  Each of these services is described below.

Academic Subject TutoringIndividualized tutoring can be a very effective way to improve a student’s understanding of basic concepts, to build self-confidence for the classroom setting, and to prepare for assessments in the form of papers, quizzes, and tests, as well as final exams and standardized tests.  The student has the opportunity to ask questions without fear of embarrassment and to learn at his/her own pace.  Individual learning styles can also be accommodated.

Kaplan Tutoring Services (KTS) offers private tutoring in all subjects for grades 5 through 12.  Tutoring in all levels of math, from pre-algebra and algebra through  calculus and statistics, is a specialty of KTS.  Tutors can also assist students with all forms of writing, from major papers to college admission essays. Tutoring in all areas of science—biology, chemistry, and physics—is also available to students.  Students can also receive help with their Spanish and French classes.  Note taking and organizational skills can also be addressed.

The primary objectives of lower level math tutoring include: promoting better understanding, building skills, and helping students to overcome math anxiety (related to math in general and specific topics, such as fractions, word problems, etc.).

Sessions usually last for one hour.  During the initial session, the student’s level of understanding and skills are assessed in order to determine areas of weakness.  The tutoring sessions address these specific weaknesses while also helping the student complete homework assignments, prepare for tests, and look ahead to upcoming topics.  By periodically contacting the student’s classroom teacher (with parental consent), the tutor can also determine additional needs of the student and track the student’s progress.

The hour-long sessions take place at a mutually agreed-upon time and location, generally once a week, but more frequently, if desired.  Some private and parochial schools permit tutors to work with students during the students’ study/free periods.  Under certain circumstances, a small travel fee may be imposed.

Summer School Classes:  KTS can offer a summer school alternative for students who need to retake a course.  By using the school’s curriculum or creating a curriculum approved by the school, KTS can provide the student with the individual attention needed to help him/her achieve success in a subject with which he/she has struggled during the regular school year.

Senior Project Coaching:  Many high school seniors in Rhode Island are required to create and present a Senior Project as a graduation requirement.  A detailed description of the Senior Project can obtained from each school’s website or Senior Project advisor.
The size and scope of the Senior Project can be overwhelming to many students.  A Kaplan Tutoring Services tutor will work with the student to develop an idea and keep him/her “on task” to the completion of the project.  A tutor can be enlisted to help at any stage of the project (sometimes the last 10% takes 90% of the time!).
The charge for Senior Project coaching is the same as for regular tutoring.
