Kaplan Tutoring Services offers test preparation for students who need to take entrance exams for admission to private and Catholic high schools.  Classes are held each fall for the SSAT and HSPT tests, or private tutoring can be provided on an individual basis.  These prep programs are described below, and a class schedule for the SSAT and HSPT classes is also provided.

SSAT/INDEPENDENT HIGH SCHOOL
ENTRANCE TEST PREPARATION

Students who desire to attend independent (private or boarding) high schools are required to take the Secondary School Admission Test (SSAT).  The independent schools use this test as part of the evaluation of students for admission, class placement, and scholarships.  The dates and locations of the tests and online registration for the tests are provided on www.ssat.org.          

   
The SSAT consists of the following parts:  Verbal (Analogies and Vocabulary) (60   minutes); Reading Comprehension (40 minutes); two sections of Math (30 minutes each); and a Writing Sample (25 minutes). 

When students are familiar with the various aspects of the test, they approach it with greater confidence.  Preparation for the SSAT consists of: a review of appropriate math skills; reading comprehension and analogies practice; vocabulary building; a critique (of grammar, spelling, punctuation, content, and organization) of the writing sample; and a discussion of test-taking strategies and techniques.

KTS offers two options for SSAT prep sessions.  The sessions may be taken as private tutoring sessions, at a mutually agreed upon time and place, for the private tutoring rate, plus a one-time fee to cover the cost of the book and materials.  The second option is a prep course consisting of two-hour classes once a week for 6 weeks.  Registration is limited to ensure individualized instruction.  For fees, see the schedule of classes below.  The private sessions and prep classes are designed to prepare students to take the December SSAT or subsequent test offerings. 

HSPT/CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL
ENTRANCE TEST PREPARATION

Students who desire to attend Catholic high schools are required to take the High School Placement Test (HSPT).  The Catholic schools use this test as part of the evaluation of students for admission, class placement, and scholarships.  The date of the test is usually the first Saturday in December.  The test may be taken at various local Catholic high schools.  Students should register at the high school of their choice.
The HSPT consists of the following parts:  Verbal Skills (16 minutes); Quantitative Skills (30 minutes); Reading (25 minutes); Mathematics (45 minutes); and Language Skills (25 minutes). 

When students are familiar with the various aspects of the test, they approach it with greater confidence.  Preparation for the HSPT consists of: a review of appropriate math skills; reading comprehension practice; vocabulary building; a review of grammar, spelling, and punctuation; and a discussion of test-taking strategies and techniques.
